Track 26: Climate Change Issues & Global Public Health
Extreme Weather Events:
Climate change is leading to an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods, heatwaves, and droughts. These events can directly impact public health by causing injuries, deaths, and displacement of populations. They can also disrupt healthcare services and infrastructure, making it difficult to respond to health emergencies.
Heat-related Illnesses:
Rising temperatures due to climate change increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration, particularly among vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Heatwaves can also exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
Vector-borne Diseases:
Climate change influences the distribution and behavior of vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks, which carry diseases like malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and Lyme disease. Warmer temperatures and changing precipitation patterns can expand the geographic range of these vectors, exposing new populations to these diseases.
The profession is in demand.
Climate change exacerbates air pollution by promoting the formation of ground-level ozone and increasing the frequency of wildfires, which release pollutants into the air. Poor air quality contributes to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, leading to increased hospitalizations and premature deaths.
Waterborne Diseases:
Changes in precipitation patterns and rising temperatures can affect water quality and availability, leading to the contamination of water sources and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrheal diseases. Flooding events can also disrupt water and sanitation systems, increasing the risk of disease transmission.

You can work directly with patients or pursue alternate nursing vocations that don’t require this.
Food Security:
Climate change affects food production and distribution systems, leading to food shortages, malnutrition, and food insecurity, particularly in regions with already vulnerable populations. Inadequate nutrition can weaken immune systems and increase susceptibility to infectious diseases.
